Native to the wet tropical forests of Colombia and Venezuela, the peace lily is not a lily at all, but an arum (the ancient plant family that also gave us anthuriums, monsteras and philodendrons). Spathiphyllum wallisii grows close to the forest floor, where warmth, humidity and filtered light remain remarkably steady through the year.
Each white hood (commonly mistaken for a flower) is actually a spathe, a modified leaf unfurling around the spadix within. That central spike carries dozens of tiny true flowers. The white spathes remain showy for weeks, gradually fading to green as they age.
It's famous for its theatrics. Thirsty, it wilts dramatically; give it a refreshing drink and it can spring back within hours. In a gently lit spot with steady moisture, it grows year-round, slowly widening into a lush clump as new crowns and offshoots emerge around its base every year.
