  Settling in — hold steady

  Year one is about location, not growth: find the bright sunless spot with kind air, then be boring. A moved or repotted stromanthe pays you back in dropped leaves; a settled one starts building the clump.

  The clump years

  From year two the rhizome does the talking: each spring flush is wider than the last, divisions become an annual option, and a mature crowded clump in a bright humid room is your best (still slim) shot at the red winter bracts.

Getting started

  Settling in

  A division re-roots over a few weeks and may sacrifice a leaf or two while it does — hold steady warmth and humidity and don't fuss. As long as the leaves still fold up each dusk, the clock is running and the plant is working.

  A sulky start is normal — the nightly fold is the sign it's settling in.

Typical timeline

  Pushing

  New leaves rise from the clump all warm season, each one arriving rolled in a tight tube that flashes the wine-red back before unfurling. Through it all the daily rhythm keeps time: blades flat by day, hands up at dusk.

  Ticking over

  Evergreen, so nothing dies back — but growth all but parks while indoor light is low. The danger season is heated air and wet cold feet, not the calendar: it wants LESS water now and MORE humidity.

  Still praying every night, just growing nothing. Ease off the can.

  Red bracts

  In a greenhouse or a lucky bright room: sprays of cherry-red bracts and orange-red sepals around small white flowers, late winter into spring. In the wild Atlantic Forest the show runs the austral spring, and each flower is a set mousetrap — a spring-loaded style that fires exactly once, in about the time of a blink, when a visiting hummingbird trips it. Houseplants rarely flower at all, and the leaves were the reason you bought it.

  Aril capsules

  The wild sequel you will almost certainly never see indoors: a fleshy capsule that splits around one to three seeds wearing a white fleshy aril. Even wild clumps set few — a study of a sister species counted about one flower in twenty becoming fruit.

  One flower in twenty, and only in the forest — the rarest card in this deck.

  Rhizome creep

  The rhizome quietly widens the clump through the warm months — new shoots at the pot's edge started down here weeks earlier, and every one is a future division.

  The cold-wet window

  What actually kills a stromanthe: a cold pot kept as wet as it was in July. Roots stop drinking below about 15 °C, water sits, and rot moves in. Water less, never cold from the tap, and keep it off chilly windowsills.

  Feed ¼-strength

  A dilute balanced feed about once a month in the growing season only. This family burns easily — accumulated fertiliser salt browns the thin leaf edges long before it helps anything.

  Divide + repot

  Split the clump in spring as growth wakes — the rhizome divides cleanly, and division is the only way the variegated forms are ever propagated: the painted leaves never come from seed.

  Keep it out of the sun

  Summer sun through glass scorches the cream sectors first — they have no chlorophyll and no defence. Bright and indirect is the whole game; dappled is what the forest gave it.

  Winter humidity

  Heated air crisps these thin leaves at the edges — the number-one complaint. Group plants, use a pebble tray, or grant it a bathroom residency until spring.

  Water with the light

  Its thirst tracks the light, and winter light is a fraction of summer's. Let the top of the mix dry before watering, use tepid water, and never leave the pot standing cold and wet.
