  Germination

  Seeds crack in two to three weeks with warmth. Most strawberries start life as a crown or runner plug instead and skip this act entirely.

Typical timeline

  Leafing

  The green engine: new leaves through spring, runners in midsummer. Feed as growth wakes.

  Winter rest

  Leaves die back and the crown sleeps. That winter chill is exactly what it needs to fruit again — don't rescue it indoors.

  Flowering

  White blooms, each one a future berry if pollinated. Outdoor pods get bees; indoor ones like a soft-brush twirl.

  Fruiting

  Green berries size up, then blush over about three weeks. Pick fully red, with the cap, in the morning.

  Autumn root flush

  After the berries, the crown invests below ground — autumn root growth is next spring's engine. Keep watering even as the top slows.

Care milestones

  Spring feed

  Give the plant a balanced feed as growth wakes in spring, then switch to a high-potassium mix once the first flowers show.

  Trim runners

  Trim the runners back: each one is a whole new plant, so pot up the best plantlets and cut the rest away so the berries keep the energy.
