Portora is a made plant, and both of its parents show in every leaf. One is Alocasia odora, the night-scented elephant ear of monsoon Asia's swamp edges, with smooth-edged shields. The other is Alocasia portei of Luzon, a trunked giant to six metres whose leaves are cut deep into long lobes and crisped along every edge. Cross the two and the lobes close up into a ruffle: a broad, upright shield with a wave running all the way round it. LariAnn Garner of Aroidia Research made the cross; her selections from it are usually dated to the 1980s.

'Low Rider' is the same plant, shrunk. It is a dwarf sport of Portora — the same glossy, wavy shields on thick, purple-flushed stalks — that stops at about knee height and offsets more freely, so one plant slowly becomes a clump. It was on sale by 2016; where and when the sport first appeared is not recorded anywhere we could verify. Both keep the family habit: grow hard through a warm summer, then slow down, or disappear outright, for winter.

Getting started

nearly always arrives as a nursery pot raised from a lab plug or a chipped piece of rhizome — not from seed

Typical timeline

Quiet stretch — winter slowdown · water far less, never cold.
